Classroom entry routines for new teachers
A classroom entry routine works when it is the same short sequence every day: you greet students at the door, they enter to a posted first task, and you start on time with one attention signal. The routine does the settling, so you are not announcing quiet over a loud room.
Why the first three minutes matter
When students know exactly what to do when they walk in, the room starts working before you say a word. When the start is unstructured, side conversations grow, and you spend the period recovering instead of teaching. The fix is not a louder voice. It is a routine the room can run without you narrating every step.
How to build yours
- Pick one doorway greeting. A hello by name, or a silent hand signal on a low-key day. Standing at the door lets you scan the hallway and the room at the same time.
- Post the first task before the bell. A do-now question on the board, materials already out, something students can start without instructions.
- Choose one attention signal and teach it. Practice it during the first week, then wait for full quiet before speaking. Waiting calmly is itself the lesson.
- Narrate what is going right. Most of the room on the do-now beats naming the students who are not.
- Run it the same way every day. The routine becomes automatic for students because it never changes for you.
A realistic example
Monday, third period. You stand at the door, greet six students by name on the way in, and the do-now is already on the board. Two students drift toward the back corner, so you move to the front of the room and narrate: tables one and four are already started, thank you. The drifters sit and open their notebooks. You have not raised your voice once.
